Dog waiting for his owner to get off work in the early morning

Sichuan Online reprinted the Sichuan Rule of Law News report that at about 2:30 a.m. on May 21, 2026, near Tianhe South Road, Deyang City, Sichuan, a black Shiba Inu was waiting for its owner to get off work on the roadside. Its owner, Ms. Yang, works as a live broadcaster and gets off work late. According to her, Happy usually accompanies her at the door of the store to get off work, and everyone nearby knows it.

This dog has two names in different reports: Happy in the Sichuan online report, and "Black Skin" in the forwarded report on Sohu. Judging from the content of the report, the two pointed to the same black Shiba Inu. It is more than one year old, timid and docile, and will not take the initiative to approach strangers. The fruit store clerk nearby also told the media that he usually had to put the food far away before he would eat it.

After being shot, he still tried to run back to his owner.

According to Sichuan Online, surveillance showed that a man riding a motorcycle and carrying a backpack stopped the car after passing by, got off the car and approached Happy. After reaching a certain distance, the man raised his hand and made a shooting motion. He seemed to have a shooting tool in his hand. After Happy was hit, he immediately ran towards Ms. Yang’s store.

The most distressing part of the report is: Happy limped to a place less than 20 meters away from Ms. Yang’s store and lay down. The man then made another shooting motion and dragged the motionless Shiba Inu into a white bag and left. Surveillance video also showed that the man had the same white bag tied to the back of his motorcycle.

Alarm, capture and crime tools

After Ms. Yang discovered that Happy did not go to her mother's house, she checked the community surveillance and saw the above process, and then went to the local police station to call the police. Sichuan Online reported that on June 2, reporters learned from the Jingyang District Branch of the Deyang Municipal Public Security Bureau that the police had captured Xiao, a suspect who stole a pet dog, and seized a motorcycle, a crossbow and other crime tools from his home.

The report also stated that after interrogation, Xiao, male, 40 years old, confessed to the fact that he shot a pet dog with a crossbow and committed theft in the parking lot of Wumiao Community on Tianyuan Street in the early morning of May 21. The case is currently under further investigation.

A dog and public safety

Such cases are often downplayed as "dog theft" or "pet disputes," but shooting an animal with a crossbow and carrying it off goes beyond the usual theft narrative. It directly harmed a specific life, and also made surrounding residents worry: If this tool can be aimed at a dog on the street, could it also be dangerous to people?

The public's outrage over the case was not only because Happy was a cute Shiba Inu, but also because he was not threatening anyone when he was injured. It waited for its owner to get off work in the early morning, and tried to return to his owner after being hit. Such scenes are recorded and should be preserved for a long time.
