On October 23, 2024, a competition show goat named Willie, also reported as Willy, was allegedly poisoned at the Vista Ridge High School FFA barn in Cedar Park, Texas. Media reports citing an arrest affidavit said student Aubrey Vanlandingham used a drench gun or similar dosing device to push liquid into the goat’s mouth multiple times.

San Antonio Express-News, The Guardian, People, and MySA reported that Willie later showed convulsions and respiratory distress and died about 21 hours after the incident. A necropsy found organophosphate intoxication from phosmet. Public reports also said the accused student allegedly admitted poisoning the goat because she believed the owner or handler was a “cheater,” and that police found searches about poisoning animals and clearing search history.

This record treats the case as an allegation unless and until a court reaches a final finding. Vanlandingham was arrested on November 22, 2024, charged with cruelty to livestock animals, and released on $5,000 bond. Leander ISD told media that it cooperated with Cedar Park police, that surveillance and security measures provided evidence for the investigation, and that disciplinary action had been taken under policy. Texas FFA also stated that it does not condone conduct that compromises animal welfare or competition ethics.

The central issue is not only a youth competition dispute. It is the use of an animal as a tool of retaliation. Willie could not understand rankings, accusations, or human rivalry, yet bore the pain and death caused by poison. The case points directly to the need to place animal protection inside youth agricultural education, school discipline, and legal response.

This archive does not use images of animal suffering or death. The images include a publicly reported law-enforcement photo of the accused person and FFA/goat-show context photographs; captions state whether each image is, or is not, from the incident or of the victim goat.
