On October 23, 2024, a competition show goat named Willie, also reported as Willy, was allegedly poisoned at the Vista Ridge High School FFA barn in Cedar Park, Texas. Media reports citing an arrest affidavit said student Aubrey Vanlandingham used a drench gun or similar dosing device to push liquid into the goat’s mouth multiple times.

San Antonio Express-News, The Guardian, People, and MySA reported that Willie later showed convulsions and respiratory distress and died about 21 hours after the incident. Texas FFA also stated that it does not condone conduct that compromises animal welfare or competition ethics.

The central issue is not only a youth competition dispute. It is the use of an animal as a tool of retaliation. Willie could not understand rankings, accusations, or human rivalry, yet bore the pain and death caused by poison. The case points directly to the need to place animal protection inside youth agricultural education, school discipline, and legal response.
