On August 15, 2021, a roughly four-month-old male stray cat was found gravely injured near Xinyuan Xincheng on Lieli Road in Zhengzhou. Rescuers later named him Jiufu. Public reports said veterinarians found symmetrical fractures in all four legs, especially severe injuries to the front legs, and damage to the mouth. The pattern did not look like a traffic accident or an animal fight. Volunteers arranged surgery and care, but Jiufu died in the early hours of August 26. Reports also noted another abused kitten had recently been found nearby.

According to reports reposted by Sina Henan, Jiufu had no name when he was found on August 15. He lay by a flower bed and could barely move.

A veterinarian said the fractures and mouth injuries did not resemble ordinary traffic trauma or an animal fight, but pointed to human abuse.

Treatment, trust and death

Rescuers named him Jiufu, hoping he could still live. Even in the care box, reports said he tried to respond to people: lifting his head to rub a finger, answering softly when someone spoke to him.

After surgery on August 20, he briefly showed signs of strength. Volunteers hoped to find him a home, but he died on August 26.

Not an isolated lead

Reports said Jiufu was the second suspected abused cat found by rescuers near the same area within two months. A younger orange kitten had also been found dead nearby.
