Seven dogs in a small shed

Police said the dogs were left in a small structure with little or no ventilation. Later warrant details reported that the temperature neared 80 F and that the dogs were left for more than 12 hours without adequate food or water.

Five puppies and Atlas did not survive

The dead dogs included five 8-month-old puppies and an adult male named Atlas. Hercules, another dog, survived after emergency fluids. The dogs were described as stiff, hot, wet to the touch and unresponsive when found.

Care cannot be delegated to an assumption

According to the warrant account, Martinez-Cortes said she had taken the dogs out in the morning, left them in cages in the shed, and assumed a juvenile stepchild would check on them, without giving instructions. Animal care cannot rest on the hope that someone else will notice danger in time.

Why this is recorded

This was not a sudden stranger attack. It was a confinement and care failure in a closed space. When dogs are entrusted to people, water, food, ventilation, temperature control and regular checks are the line between care and death.
