Lucca was a U.S. Marine Corps explosive-detection dog credited with more than 400 missions and no human fatalities under her watch before losing a leg to an IED blast in Afghanistan.

Story

Lucca worked as an explosive-detection dog across Iraq and Afghanistan, credited with more than 400 missions and no human fatalities under her watch.

On her last mission she found one IED and was injured by another, losing her left front leg before retiring to her former handler’s family.

Lucca is archived because the story records both life-saving detection work and the physical cost borne by the dog.
