From a foam board in Beihai toward the way home

In the summer of 2024, Nana, a western Pacific spotted seal only a few months old, appeared near Beihai in Guangxi. The little seal swam in the sea and rested on a floating foam board, drawing attention online. Behind the charming image was a young animal far from its group, with visible wounds and without a mature grasp of migration routes.

Experts cited in the report said Nana had five visible wounds, possibly from collision or scraping against sharp objects or reefs. She may have lost her way while chasing fish, facing abnormal weather, or because her own navigation system failed. In October 2024, Beihai's marine authority launched an emergency rescue plan and transferred her to professional care. Later she was brought back to Liaoning to prepare for the sea again.

Lingxiaozhe in the snow

The other story began in Qinghai. On March 4, 2025, an ecological ranger found a six-month-old snow leopard cub in the mountains of Suojia Township, Zhiduo County, Yushu. Staff from Sanjiangyuan National Park recalled that the cub was stiff, cold, and close to shock.

Lingxiaozhe's name carries the season of its discovery. For wildlife rescue, the best ending is often not keeping an animal near people, but returning it safely when possible. Yet training a cub or subadult for the wild requires space, conditions, and long-term assessment. The report noted that adult male snow leopards had been released successfully before, while cubs and subadults still lacked the necessary training conditions.

Rescue is not possession

Nana and Lingxiaozhe did not share the same future. Nana's treatment and wild training aimed toward returning her to the sea. Staff trained spotted seals to avoid fishing nets, remain wary of humans, and catch live fish. Such training may not sound gentle, but it is meant to reduce dependence and increase survival chances.

Lingxiaozhe reminds us that rescue does not always lead to release. Not being released does not mean being abandoned. It means people must recognize risk, conditions, and responsibility. For a cub once near death, long-term professional care with minimal disturbance can also be a responsible outcome.

Why this meeting matters

This story links Liaodong Bay, Beihai, Dalian, Yushu, and Sanjiangyuan. It shows that wildlife protection is not an abstract slogan, but patient work: discovery, transfer, treatment, training, assessment, and sometimes release.

This archive records Nana and Lingxiaozhe because they clarify the meaning of kindness toward wild animals. They are not pets and rescue is not a show. Kindness means helping when they are weakest, letting go when they can leave, and continuing to care when they cannot.
