1996年8月16日、米国イリノイ州 Brookfield Zoo で、3歳の男の子が柵を越えて西部低地ゴリラの展示場に落ち、けがをして意識を失った。観客が叫ぶなか、8歳の雌ゴリラ Binti Jua が近づいた。自分の子 Koola を連れていながら、Binti は男の子をそっと抱き上げ、職員が受け取れる扉の近くへ運んだ。男の子は手の骨折と顔のけがを負い、4日入院して回復した。Binti Jua は「太陽の娘」を意味し、異種間の思いやりと動物のケア能力を語る代表的な例となった。
Scarlett：火災現場から子猫を運び出したブルックリンの母猫
1996年3月30日、ニューヨーク・ブルックリンの廃ガレージで火災が起きた。母猫 Scarlett は重いやけどを負い、目も水ぶくれでふさがれた状態だったが、5匹の子猫を一匹ずつ火の中から運び出した。消防士 David Giannelli が親子を見つけ、治療につなげた。この物語は後に数千通の里親希望を集め、動物の勇気には人間の救助、治療、譲渡、長期のケアが続かなければならないことを教えている。
Jambo：転落した男の子のそばに立ち続けた「優しい巨人」
1986年8月31日、5歳の Levan Merritt は Jersey Zoo のゴリラ展示場に落ち、意識を失った。観客が恐怖で叫ぶなか、シルバーバックの Jambo は彼を攻撃しなかった。むしろ子どものそばにとどまり、男の子と他のゴリラの間に立ち、背中に触れる姿も見られた。子どもが意識を取り戻して泣き始めると、Jambo と他のゴリラは離れ、救急隊員と飼育員が中に入って救助できた。訪問者 Brian Le Lion が撮影した映像は世界に広まり、Jambo の死後、Jersey Zoo はこの「優しい巨人」を記念する銅像を建てた。
