A missing-person call

Taiwan News, citing police information, reported that an elderly woman with dementia was reported missing by her family on August 3, 2024. Police and the fire department began a joint search.

For a person living with dementia, the danger of becoming lost often comes from overlapping risks: disorientation, fatigue, weather, terrain and water channels. The earlier a search area narrows, the better the chance of keeping the person safe.

The direction Clay found

Search teams gave the woman's scent to two search and rescue dogs, Clay and Henin. After taking the scent, Clay headed into a wooded area, and police and firefighters followed him.

That is the crucial part of the story: people did not first spot the woman. A trained dog led them toward a direction that was not immediately obvious. Rescuers eventually found her in an irrigation ditch.

Conscious when found

Police said the woman was conscious when found and was taken to hospital in stable condition. A search that might have stretched into a wider or later operation ended at a point where help could still arrive in time.

This record does not turn Clay into a miracle animal. He did the work a search dog is trained to do: read scent, indicate a search direction, and help human rescuers reach a person in need faster.

Why this record matters

Search dogs are often noticed at disaster scenes, but missing-person searches in cities and towns need them too. A ditch, a wooded patch, or one wrong turn can keep an elderly person from returning to safety alone.

Clay's work reminds us that working animals are not decorations in rescue systems. They are a practical part of them. With scent, they make the unknown smaller and bring a person waiting for help back into human sight.
