It slowed its steps

In May 2026, Wang Yifei of the Dalian guide dog training base shared a story in media reports. After a visually impaired woman in Chongqing became pregnant, her guide dog slowed down and missed the bus several times. After the baby was born, the dog returned to its normal pace.

The names were not made public, and the report did not describe every trip in detail. This archive keeps that boundary. What matters is the small fact itself: in repeated daily travel, a trained guide dog sensed a change in its handler's condition and made steadiness more important than speed.

Guiding is more than navigation

Many people think a guide dog only avoids obstacles and leads a person to a destination. In reality, a guide dog works inside a relationship: when to stop, when to detour, when to insist, and when to slow down.

During pregnancy, the dog did not speak and does not need human-like lines written for it. It simply slowed its steps, lowered risk, and gave its handler more steadiness. That quiet care is easy to miss, but it is exactly why the story should be remembered.

Twenty years and more than 400 guide dogs

The story belongs to a larger history. Reports said China's first mainland guide dog training institution, the Dalian base, was established in 2006. Over twenty years it trained 430 qualified guide dogs and provided them free of charge to visually impaired users in 28 provincial-level regions.

Behind the number are breeding, foster care, training, matching, and follow-up service. A guide dog is not simply a tool. It is a working partner trained to share daily life, judge environments, and help a person enter public space with independence and dignity.

Let them enter the world

Reports also noted that visually impaired people with guide dogs are still sometimes refused entry to restaurants, parks, and other spaces. Law has required convenience for guide dogs in public places, but public understanding still lags.

When we record the guide dog that slowed down, we also remember that such care needs society's cooperation. Guide dogs are not pets intruding into public space. They are working, and they are part of a person's safety, independence, and dignity.
