In May 2024, more than twenty pet dogs were reportedly poisoned in Yanbao Kangrun Garden, Fengtai District, Beijing. After a dog named Lele collapsed

When Legal Daily visited the estate on July 4, Li Yuehong was still grieving Lele. She said she had taken the dog downstairs as usual, letting it move around near the fitness square. Soon Lele collapsed, foamed at the mouth, convulsed and died.

Lele was not alone. Only after hearing neighbors talk did Li learn that many dogs had recently died and police were investigating. The report said more than twenty dogs, including poodles, border collies and Chinese rural dogs, had been poisoned.

Poison in a shared residential space

The report said suspected poisoned pig trotters, elbows, meatballs and sausages were placed where pet dogs often moved. Fluoroacetate, a rodenticide component, was detected in stomach contents from dead dogs. Police had opened an investigation.

Poison placed in a residential public area does not only kill dogs. Older residents, children, other animals, cleaners and anyone passing by may come into contact with it. Residents’ fear that a child might eat it is not exaggeration; it is part of the public-safety risk.

Do not answer conflict with poison

Dog management, leashes, cleaning after pets and shared-space order all need rules and discussion. But none of these issues can justify poisoning. Poisoning dogs is the cruelest and least controllable way to answer a community conflict.

The dogs that died did not understand human disputes. They were walking and playing with their families, then lost their lives in convulsions and suffocation caused by poison. This archive records their pain and says clearly: responsible dog ownership should be promoted, but malicious poisoning must be condemned and pursued. Kindness to living beings and public safety point toward the same more responsible community.
