In late October 2024, a series of dog poisonings occurred in and around Yuexiu International Financial Hui, a residential compound in Jianghan District, Wuhan. Jingshi Live reported that sausages containing yellow pills were placed on a public lawn; six pet dogs were poisoned and four died. The drug was later reported as niclosamide. On November 1, police issued an administrative penalty decision, confirming that two nearby shop operators bought and placed the drug because they believed dogs relieving themselves near their storefronts affected business. Their conduct was treated as picking quarrels and provoking trouble, and they were administratively detained. A later Southern Metropolis Daily report recorded that the owner of one dead dog, Tutu, kept pursuing the case, obtained a price appraisal and pushed the matter into criminal procedure.

Sausages on the lawn

According to public reporting, Ms. Zhang said the incident began around 10 p.m. on October 25. Her dog vomited at home, soon began breathing rapidly, and died on the morning of October 27. At first she thought it was an isolated accident. Only later did neighbors tell her that several dogs around the compound had been poisoned or had died during those days.

Residents found suspicious sausages on the lawn where dogs often played. The footage showed sausages cut open with yellow pills inserted. The report said the substance was later identified as niclosamide, a deworming drug mainly used for large animals such as pigs, horses, cattle and sheep; for smaller companion animals, excessive dosage can have grave consequences.

Six poisoned, four did not come back

Ms. Zhu found her dog stiff the next morning and took it to a nearby veterinary hospital, but it could not be saved. Ms. Wang's golden retriever sniffed around the lawn and developed asthma-like panting the next day; it survived largely because of its size. Jingshi Live reported that from October 25 to 27, six pet dogs in and around the compound were poisoned, four of whom died.

Southern Metropolis Daily later identified one of the dead dogs as a West Highland terrier named Tutu. Tutu's owner, Summer, found a drug-stuffed sausage in the dog's vomit. After Tutu died, she saw other dogs being rescued at the veterinary hospital next to her shop, and she reported the case together with other owners.

From administrative detention to criminal procedure

Jingshi Live reported that police issued an administrative penalty decision on November 1. The two offenders were nearby shop operators. Because they believed dogs urinating or defecating near their storefronts affected business, they bought drugs and placed them on the compound lawn. The conduct was deemed to constitute picking quarrels and provoking trouble, and both were administratively detained.

The Southern Metropolis Daily report in March 2025 recorded a longer fight for accountability. Summer first tried to obtain a price appraisal for the dead dogs and was rejected. With support from the Guangdong Pet Industry Association and additional materials, the price authority later appraised the four dead dogs at a total value of 9,500 yuan. The report said that after criminal filing, local prosecutors considered the threat to public safety and characterized the case as the crime of placing dangerous substances; Summer was still waiting for trial at the time of reporting.

Poisoned bait in public space

The cruelty of this case lies not only in the death of four dogs, but also in the fact that poisoned bait was placed on a public lawn. This was not a hidden corner. It was a place where residents walked dogs, children passed, older people strolled, cleaners worked, and other animals moved. Throwing drug-laced food into such a space shows disregard both for public safety and for life.

If pet waste affects business or daily life, a community can discuss leashes, cleanup, persuasion, complaints and management. There is no reason to make poison the answer. The dogs who died were not an abstract amount of loss; they were family members raised from puppyhood and shared life every day. Tutu's owner persisted through a long process for her own dog, and also left a path that others may later follow.
