A police receipt from Jiangwan Police Station, Hongkou Branch of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, recorded that a resident surnamed Fan had killed the cat and buried the body.

The receipt also said Fan apologized and paid 5,000 yuan after mediation. Such a settlement could not reverse the kitten’s death and shows how many animal-abuse cases are still pushed into mediation and compensation because direct legal protection is limited.

Gaodun Education’s dismissal notice

On the evening of August 15, Gaodun Education stated that Fan was indeed its employee and that the company had immediately dismissed him and would never rehire him.

The notice also said that the absence of a specific anti-cruelty law did not mean anyone could trample on life or abuse animals. That sentence captured a basic public line: legal gaps cannot excuse cruelty.

The case was small in scale but typical. A community kitten was protected by residents, yet an adult took it away and killed it.
