Gander, a Newfoundland dog with the Royal Rifles of Canada, was killed during the Battle of Hong Kong after carrying away a grenade.

Story

Gander accompanied Canadian troops to Hong Kong and died after carrying a grenade away from wounded soldiers.

The archive keeps a source-excerpt image rather than using an unrelated Newfoundland placeholder.

Gander is archived because military animal memory must include both courage and the fact of being taken into war.
