In November 2024, dog owners in Guangzhou reported that pet dogs suddenly collapsed, convulsed and died after walks in several districts. The Guangdong Pet Industry Association said on November 16 that it had received information about more than forty dogs suspected of poisoning. Southern Weekly reported the deaths of pets such as “Wudong” and “Shaomai,” and owners began making a poisoning-risk map. Police intervened, and some reports mentioned cyanide-related clues.

Deaths after ordinary walks

Southern Weekly reported that two dogs, Wudong and Shaomai, became abnormal after a walk near Ersha Island and died soon after. For their owner, this was not a routine pet accident, but the sudden loss of family members.

Similar reports came from Yuexiu, Haizhu, Liwan, Tianhe and other areas, with the association counting more than forty suspected cases.

Association warning and owner self-help

On November 16, 2024, the Guangdong Pet Industry Association warned owners to avoid suspicious food and strengthen supervision during walks.

Owners also made their own poisoning-risk map. The need for such a map shows that the harm had become a public-space fear, not only isolated grief.

Police and testing clues

Public reports said police had intervened. Some reports mentioned cyanide-related testing or clues, while the exact person, method and final responsibility still depend on official findings.

This archive records what public sources can support: multiple suspected poisonings, owner and association reports, and police involvement.

Why the case must be remembered

These dogs had names, families, routes and photos. They were not silent statistics inside the number forty.

Placing poison in public spaces can endanger animals, children and pedestrians. Cruelty to vulnerable lives also erodes a city’s basic sense of safety.
