On November 28, 2018, Manchinha, a female mixed-breed stray dog who lived around the parking area of a Carrefour hypermarket in Osasco, Greater São Paulo, Brazil, was killed. Public reports and case summaries state that, because a corporate visit was expected, the store wanted animals removed from the premises; the employee responsible for security was later accused of giving Manchinha mortadella containing rat poison and beating her with an aluminum bar.

Manchinha was rescued by municipal animal-control/zoonosis staff but did not survive. G1 reported that the veterinarian who tried to save her said hemorrhage was the cause of death. Carrefour first said the dog had been run over, but later acknowledged an employee attack; the case was formally reported to authorities only days after the incident.

São Paulo police investigated the case. Public sources say the security worker was identified and removed from duty, admitted the attack during questioning, and expressed regret. On December 18, 2018, police concluded the inquiry and attributed responsibility to him for abuse and mistreatment resulting in the dog’s death. The case triggered protests in Brazil and abroad and became a symbol in later debates over stronger penalties for cruelty to dogs and cats.

Manchinha’s name means “little spot.” She had been a parking-lot stray who was fed and recognized by people around the store, but died because institutional “clean-up” logic met individual violence. This archive includes the case to preserve a clear institutional fact: animals are not obstacles to be removed for inspections, image management, or commercial order.
