On 21 August 2010, CCTV outside a home in Stoke Heath, Coventry recorded Mary Elizabeth Bale approaching Lola, a four-year-old tabby cat, stroking her, then lifting her by the scruff and putting her into a wheelie bin before closing the lid. Lola’s owners, Darryl and Stephanie Andrews-Mann, later heard meowing and rescued her after about 15 hours.

After reviewing the security footage, the owners posted the video online to identify the person responsible, and the footage spread rapidly. Public reports state that Bale was later identified and prosecuted by the RSPCA. At Coventry Magistrates’ Court, she admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a cat. She was fined £250, ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £1,171.40 in costs, and banned from keeping or owning animals for five years.

District Judge Caroline Goulborn said the potential harm to Lola had been substantial, even though the cat was not physically injured. The court also considered the public vilification Bale had faced, while stating that personal stress was no excuse for the act. The case became an early example of viral video evidence driving both animal-welfare accountability and debate over online mob punishment.
