A noon landslide

At noon on February 8, 2025, a landslide struck Jinping village in Junlian county, Yibin, Sichuan, burying homes and a production building. China Daily reported that by the next morning local authorities had confirmed 10 residential houses and one production building buried, with one person dead, 28 missing and two injured.

AP, citing official information, reported that recent rainfall and geological conditions contributed to the disaster, creating a debris accumulation about 1.2 kilometers long and more than 100,000 cubic meters in volume. Such a scene makes searching urgent and technically difficult.

Eight search dogs at the site

China Daily reported that the Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a national comprehensive firefighting rescue team consisting of 345 people, 101 vehicles and eight search dogs on the day of the landslide. Mine rescue, engineering, medical and geological experts also joined the response.

A Xinhua photo shows rescuers searching the Junlian landslide area with the help of a sniffer dog. In a wide, unstable debris field, machinery, life detectors, human search teams and canine scent work each serve different roles. Search dogs help narrow the unknown through smell.

Do not turn a group effort into one invented hero

This record does not invent names for the eight dogs or turn a complex disaster response into the achievement of one animal. What public materials confirm is that the dogs entered the scene as part of China's firefighting rescue force and participated in the search for missing people.

Disaster rescue is completed by people, equipment and animals working together. Recording the search dogs is not about exaggerating one part of the effort; it is about acknowledging that these quiet working animals were truly there.

Why this record matters

Animal stories should record not only companionship but also the fact that working animals enter dangerous public rescue sites. A landslide ruin is not a romantic place. It is mud, stone, broken timber, collapsed structures and a list of people waiting to be found.

The eight search dogs at Junlian remind us that animal labor in public rescue often appears briefly in news photographs and then disappears from memory. GAM keeps this record because they were not background; they were part of the rescue team.
