On December 7, 2024, Huazhong Agricultural University said that a student surnamed Su mixed human medicine with water and fed it several times to multiple stray cats on campus between October and November 2024, causing harm. The university gave Su a serious warning, canceled his postgraduate recommendation qualification and awards eligibility, and ordered him to pay for treatment, rescue and placement of the animals. In 2025, after Su entered the inspection stage for a public institution job in Guilin, Guangxi, public reports and complaints led to the cancellation of his hiring qualification.

Campus cats and drug feeding

According to the university notice, Su was a student at the College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine. Between October and November 2024, he mixed human medicine into water and repeatedly fed it to several stray cats on campus, harming them.

The cruelty lies not only in the injury, but in using animals’ dependence on food and human contact against them.

University notice and handling

On December 7, 2024, the university said it had investigated the case and issued a serious warning. It canceled Su’s postgraduate recommendation qualification, awards eligibility, and ordered him to bear costs for treatment, rescue and placement.

The school also said it would build records for campus stray cats and improve rescue, placement, life education and animal management.

Later job-recruitment controversy

In June 2025, Su appeared in a Guilin public institution recruitment inspection announcement. Media coverage again drew attention to the campus-cat case.

On July 1, 2025, the relevant authority announced that Su’s hiring qualification had been canceled. This does not mean animal-cruelty law is already complete; rather, it shows a rare case where public records and institutional review produced a concrete consequence.

Why the archive records it

This case has a university notice, mainstream media reporting and a later public consequence. The archive records it to preserve a clear example of hidden harm against animals under a setting of trust and access.

Campus stray cats should be managed, rescued and sterilized with care. They should not become objects for covert harm in corners of a university.
