On January 27, 2023, in a residential compound in Zhengzhou, Henan, an eight-month-old Labrador named Grape opened the door and left home. Public reports said the owner later found a blood-stained woven bag near a basement garbage area. Inside was Grape, already dead, with 18 wounds. Jimun News reported that local police had opened a case. The pain of this case lies not only in the harm itself, but in how a gentle, lost companion animal trying to find the way home was dragged into death.

From home to the elevator, then two hours that never returned

According to Jimun News and reposted public reports, around 18:00 on January 27, after the owner left home, Grape opened the door handle and ran out. Elevator footage showed the dog reaching the fifth floor and later following someone to the first floor.

At 19:39, someone in the property-management chat said a blood-stained woven bag had been found near the basement garbage area, with something still moving inside. At 20:15, the owner arrived, opened the bag and found Grape, with 18 wounds.

The neighbor said he was afraid of dogs; the cruelty cannot be explained by that

Reports said the involved neighbor claimed the dog had been jumping and barking in his home, and that he killed the dog because he feared being harmed. The parties disputed how Grape entered the neighbor’s home.

Even if one followed the neighbor’s stated self-protection explanation, inflicting more than a dozen wounds and discarding an injured animal in a bag was far beyond any necessary response.

Police filing and the limits of the legal frame

Jimun News reported that police at the local station confirmed on January 30 that the matter had been filed and a special team was investigating. Lawyers cited in public reporting said the pet dog was protected as private property, and the conduct could involve intentional destruction of another person’s property.

Such cases often enter the system through property damage, public safety or other existing legal channels. That can bring a limited response, but it does not fully recognize the pain suffered by the animal as a living being.

Why this case is recorded

Grape was not an abstract item of property. He was an eight-month-old Labrador who could open a door, ride an elevator, and try to find his way home after getting lost.

This archive records the name Grape. Cruelty to animals is not a small matter, and it should not be brushed aside with a sentence such as “I was afraid of dogs” or reduced to compensation alone.
