In late June 2025, Cui, a student at Guangdong Ocean University’s College of Food Science and Technology, was accused of taking a cat kept by a convenience-store owner near the campus and killing her. Yangcheng Evening News reported that a video posted on social media showed a man taking the cat near a storefront at 5:51 a.m. on June 20 and turning into an alley. Public images and reports said the cat was a nursing mother.

Taken away in the early morning

The image of her alive with kittens matters. She was not an anonymous object, but a life watched over by the shop owner and feeding young kittens. That is why her disappearance and death cut so deeply.

The video screenshots circulated by media and social platforms show a man near the store in the early morning. This archive records them as media and public-source visual leads, not as a substitute for official investigation.

Between official notice and public disclosures

The university later confirmed the core fact: Cui took another person’s cat to his off-campus residence and killed the cat after being bitten while feeding her. Details such as a broken forepaw, broken tail and burn marks are recorded here as points reported by media and public disclosures, not as items individually confirmed by the university.

Beijing Daily, Lianhe Zaobao and World Journal all cited public claims that the cat was found dead with serious injuries. Whatever later forensic document might confirm each detail, the public materials already describe a grave result: a nursing mother cat was taken from a familiar storefront and died, leaving her kittens without their mother.

School discipline and public anger

On June 21, the College of Food Science and Technology said it had formed a working group to investigate. On June 24, Guangdong Ocean University issued a disciplinary decision, saying Cui violated school rules, social ethics and student conduct standards, and gave him probation with suspension of studies.

That result triggered strong public criticism. The anger was not only about one university, but about a recurring difficulty: when companion animals are cruelly harmed, existing rules often treat the matter through school discipline, public-order rules or property loss, while the suffering and value of the animal’s life remain insufficiently recognized.

More than a minor violation

This was not a small case of improper handling. Taking another person’s nursing mother cat away and killing her after being bitten showed disregard for animal pain, the owner’s grief and the kittens’ dependence.

This record remembers that mother cat as a living being who cared for kittens and depended on human kindness, before human cruelty ended her life. Her death again shows that kindness to living beings cannot remain only a moral appeal; schools, communities and law need clearer and stronger answers to such cruelty.
