In July 2021, the Weibo user “Yaruitiao” said that her golden retriever Siri was supposed to be transported by air from Nanjing to Guiyang, but Guangzhou Bangbang International Freight Agency actually used land transport. Siri died of heatstroke during the trip. Public reports by The Paper, The Beijing News, Jiemian and CCTV said local market and transport authorities became involved; the company acknowledged responsibility for the dog’s death and admitted using land transport. The case exposed a wider pet-shipping problem: charging for air transport, using land transport, unclear qualifications and opaque handling.

She was supposed to fly, but died on the road

Public reports describe Siri as a golden retriever. Her guardian, posting as “Yaruitiao,” said she contacted Guangzhou Bangbang Pet Transport to bring Siri from Nanjing back to Guiyang and paid nearly 3,000 yuan for an air-transport service.

In that understanding, Siri should have gone through quarantine paperwork and a proper air-cargo process before meeting her family again. Instead, reports said the company put Siri on a vehicle for land transport. When the guardian asked for videos and updates, the responses did not resolve her fear.

Charging for air transport, using land transport

The Paper reported the guardian’s claim that the company charged for air transport but used land transport, causing Siri to die of heatstroke in the vehicle. Later reports by The Beijing News said transport officials in Huadu stated that the company acknowledged responsibility and admitted using land transport.

This was not a simple logistics mistake. Pet transport does not move a box; it carries a living being who can panic, thirst, overheat and die. Changing the method secretly deprived both the guardian and Siri of the care the promise implied.

Regulators, apology and settlement

The Paper reported on July 16, 2021, that Huadu District market supervision staff had received the complaint and sent personnel to handle it. Other reports said transport authorities also became involved, and noted that the company had business registration but no filing with transport authorities for such transport.

A later The Beijing News report said that on August 9, 2021, Siri’s guardian posted that the parties had reached a settlement after the company publicly apologized, promised to accept public supervision and carry out internal rectification. The company also promised to donate dog food in Siri’s name.

She was not a “living object”

A Beijing News commentary observed that some companies seem to treat pets merely as “living objects,” reducing a death to money or a replacement dog. That mindset is precisely what makes opaque handling so dangerous.

Siri’s death forced many people to look closely at pet-shipping gaps: whether air transport can be verified, whether land transport is qualified, who controls temperature, water, transfer, video updates and emergency response. For guardians these gaps are anxiety; for animals they may be fatal.

Why this case is recorded

This is not a street-abuse case, but it is still a brutal handling of a companion animal’s life. Siri was entrusted to a service as a family member; she returned as the outcome of an industry failure.

This archive records Siri to remember the golden retriever who was promised a journey home and never reached it. Pet transport is not only a commercial service. It is entrusted care for a life.
