After the dog was put into a bag

In late November 2024, video about the handling of a stray dog at Mianyang Open University spread online. Images used in public reports show a person near the campus gate handling a dog that had been placed in a bag. Media reports said the man threw the bag containing the dog and kept striking it with a stick; after several seconds, the dog no longer moved. Sina Sichuan also reported that students said the dog often appeared near the school and some called it “Xuejie,” or senior schoolmate.

The school notice and the result

On November 28, Mianyang Open University issued a notice saying that a stray dog had often appeared at its Jiaoyu Middle Road campus. To prevent threats to teachers and students and disruption to teaching order, the school arranged for a security worker to capture the dog and take it away on the morning of November 27. The notice said that during transfer the dog resisted strongly and bit the bag, causing the worker to overreact and kill the dog by throwing and beating it.

More than the word “dismissed”

The school said police questioned and criticized the worker. It also criticized the safety officer across the school, deducted annual performance pay and terminated the security worker’s contract. That result should be recorded, but it does not erase the fear borne by the small animal in those images. Once the dog had been caught, bagged and taken away, the risk was already under control. The later slide into beating it to death shows not only one person’s loss of control, but also the roughness of the campus procedure.

Campus management could have been more humane

Jimu’s commentary on Ifeng said that beating a stray dog to death was plainly wrong and was not a correct way to treat life; schools should have concrete procedures for handling stray animals. Tide News also noted that a dog frequently appearing on campus was not a sudden event. If the school had a clear and workable plan for capture, isolation and contact with rescuers or professionals, a life would not have had to be pushed into ad hoc handling and violence.

Campuses need safety, and students and teachers deserve protection from risk. But safety should not use cruelty as a shortcut.
